Planning Ideas for Recitals:

Violinist Composers
History is littered with great performers whose legacies have been preserved through their compositions.  Though more well-known for his organ playing, Bach was concertmaster of various courts, Suk and Sarasate were two of the great violinists of the 20th century and Respighi was the first violinist of the Mugellini Quartet before he focused on composition.

England's Music
Our English programme is rich in its diversity but has one common thread in that it is all quintessentially English. All four of our composers were at one point alive simultaneously, though their lives and compositional styles differed. Edward Elgar needs no introduction as a cornerstone of English music, and his violin sonata is rightly played throughout the world. Both Frank Bridge, who lived in the village of Friston on the Sussex coast, and Benjamin Britten, who lived in Aldeburgh, Suffolk, were inspired by the sea in their composition, and indeed Bridge was Britten's tutor and mentor. Dame Ethel Smythe is less well-known, but was very active in both the music world and the suffragette movement, and indeed she went to prison for her beliefs after throwing a brick through a cabinet minister's window after he made a disparaging remark about women!
