"The London Bridge Ensemble and friends once again welcome you to a festival rich in chamber music and song. This fourth festival is bigger and better than ever, with three guest artists and six concerts, as well as events involving young people.
Various themes thread through our programming – in particular, we explore works by lions of the chamber music repertoire, Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms, juxtaposing these with the colourful Romantic world of Samuel Barber. This includes his famously elegiac Adagio, part of the string quartet by this American composer which we feature during the festival.
Amongst many highlights, there is a Saturday Schubertiade which includes the sublime and haunting song cycle Die Winterreise. The festival culminates on Sunday in Brahms’s mighty String Sextet in G. And we are delighted to include Voyages, originally written for the Ensemble by David Matthews for our Wigmore debut back in 2005.
Our distinguished guests include Kate Gould’s cellist husband, Richard Lester of the Florestan Trio, Sara Bitlloch, leader of the Elias Quartet and Krysia Osostowicz, formerly a member of Domus with Richard, and now leader of the Dante Quartet. We are thrilled to be performing with such a wonderful line-up......."

Our third Winchester Chamber Music Festival took place this April. The ensemble had great fun making music with their two wonderful guests, Lucy Gould and Robert Plane. Audiences were large and enthusiastic, and innovations included a very special late-night concert in St Lawrence Church and our new festival club where convivial post-concert drinks and chat flourished. There was a poignant air as we finished the Brahms Piano Quintet, playing for the last time with Ben Nabarro, but it was an inspiring weekend full of great works and committed performances. Roll on 2011!
Benjamin Nabarro, a founder member, has recently said farewell to the ensemble after eight years. We all remember many wonderful concerts and hugely enjoyable times with Ben over the years and want to wish him and his young family all the best for the future. Ben's fantastic fiddle playing is preserved on four recordings with the ensemble.
Followers of the London Bridge Ensemble are shortly in for a double treat: part two of the group's survey of Bridge's early works will be released at the end of July on the Dutton label. Their Schumann recording will follow closely behind with the release scheduled for just after the summer. We look forward to bringing you clips from these super new recordings in the near future.
The London Bridge Ensemble are delighted to present their third festival of chamber music and song, as ever featuring masterpieces of the repertoire alongside less familiar but equally rewarding compositions. Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Brahms and Schumann rub shoulders with Bartók and Martinů and there’s a Romantic string quartet by Bridge, from whom the Ensemble takes its name.
As well as concerts at the Discovery Centre, there’s a late evening concert at the lovely St Lawrence Church, an event for families and a masterclass featuring some of the region’s budding young performers.
