Following the sell-out success of Beethoven Unwrapped, presented by Classic FM’s John Suchet last year, and Elgar Unwrapped in June 2017, Southampton’s professional orchestra focus on the music of Tchaikovsky. Joined by pianist and broadcaster David Owen Norris, SÓN provide their audience with a deeper understanding of the Russian composer’s magnificent Symphony No 5. The orchestra delve under the surface of this superb masterpiece in search of the man and his music, with live extracts from both the piano and orchestra, before giving a complete performance of this awe-inspiring work in the second half.

SÓN and artistic director Robin Browning are especially honoured to welcome one of the world’s most celebrated pianists, John Lill, to perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No 3 in Southampton this season. Lill is making this special appearance with the orchestra as part of their ongoing Beethoven 20:20 cycle, which visits all nine symphonies and the final three piano concertos (all featuring Lill as soloist) on an epic journey, due to climax in 2020 as part of the global celebrations of the composer’s 200th anniversary.
Further info about this exciting event will be announced in late summer, with tickets going on sale only days after our 17-18 season opener – Tchaikovsky Unwrapped on Sat 30th September.
