Alberto Mesirca continues to present himself in the company of excellent musicians, managing to bring the guitar into the chamber music field at the highest level. This time, the champion from Galliera Veneta, Padua, presents a programme with a “cantabile” cut, flanked by the amazing Dutch violinist Daniel Rowland.
The recording opens with Paganini: three Sonatas and the Cantabile in D Major, Op. 17, give the two musicians the chance to express their “bravura” in chiselling the characters of the compositions, without renouncing a pleasant interpretative courage which touches peaks of fine lyrism and subtle humour.
In the Grand Duo Concertant Op. 85 by Giuliani, the guitar liberates itself from the mere role of accompaniment and becomes more and more an essential part of a dialogue which reveals itself with shapes and vivid colours in the Canciones populares by Manuel de Falla, presented with an uncommon sensibility and with unmatched timbre palette.
The four pictures of the famous Histoire du Tango by Astor Piazzolla are well located at the end of a repertoire which has variable shapes and atmospheres, leaving space to an encore, the famous Amapola by Joseph Lacalle, which is presented here as a tender and delicate farewell. A really pleasant recording.
