Helen Grime Focus Day at the Wigmore Hall – Sat 15 Oct at 1pm

Rachel Roberts takes part in the Wigmore Hall’s prestigious chamber music season this month in a concert which celebrates the work of British composer, Helen Grime.

Grime has been commissioned by some of the most established performers in the world including London Symphony Orchestra, BCMG, Britten Sinfonia, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the Tanglewood Music Center, and has worked with conductors such as Daniel Harding, Pierre Boulez, Yan Pascal Tortelier and Sir Mark Elder.

Rachel joins Huw Watkins piano, Alexandra Wood violin, Philip Higham ‘cello and Nicholas Daniel oboe in the first of two concerts.

Their programme comprises:

Aviary Sketches
Inspired by the celebrated American artist and sculptor, Joseph Cornell’s boxed assemblages, created from found objects.
Huw Watkins piano, Alexandra Wood violin, Philip Higham ‘cello
(Co-commissioned by Wigmore Hall with the support of André Hoffmann, President of the Fondation Hoffmann)

Three Whistler Miniatures
These pieces refer to three chalk and pastel miniatures, displayed in the Isabella Stewart Museum in Boston. Throughout the piece the violin and cello form a sort of unit, set against the contrasting nature of the piano.
Alexandra Wood violin, Rachel Roberts viola, Philip Higham ‘cello
(Commissioned by the Claremont Trio Commission Consortium and first performed by the Claremont Trio in Boston, USA, in 2012).

To see the summer sky
This is a sublimely delicate and virtuosic piece for violin and viola in four movements.

Five North Eastern Scenes
Huw Watkins piano and Nicholas Daniel oboe give the UK premiere of this work.

Oboe Quartet
A work born out of Grime’s love of the oboe, and one which explores its relationship with the three string instruments.  Helen Grime studied the oboe alongside composition at the Royal College of Music in London, and she retains a strong bond with the instrument.
