Robert Plane and the Gould Piano embark on USA west coast tour

Robert Plane and the Gould Piano Trio will be giving a series of concerts along the west coast of the USA this month.

From the 19th to the 26th of January, they will give five concerts in four different venues across Oregon and California.

During the tour, their programmes will feature piano trios by Haydn, Beethoven, Dvořák and Ravel, as well as Frühling’s Trio for clarinet, cello and piano and Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time. They will also perform Huw Watkins’s ‘Four Fables’, which was written for the ensemble in 2018, and has featured in many of their programmes around the UK since then. Robert Plane is particularly looking forward to bringing this piece on their travels:

Having given a number of performances of Huw Watkins’ Four Fables in the UK since its premiere in 2018, we’re delighted to give the US premiere in Portland on this tour.

Their first concert will be hosted by the Neskowin Chamber Music Society at the beautiful setting of Camp Wi-Ne-Ma, Oregon, where they will perform in the camp’s chapel, right on the side of the remote, unspoilt beach. The chapel was also the venue of Rob’s first ever chamber music trip to the USA in 2008, which he amusingly recounts:

In those days there was only one direct flight a day to Portland from Europe, from Frankfurt, and of course my flight into Frankfurt was horribly delayed, so I missed my connection. I arrived in Neskowin just in the nick of time, but sadly my suitcase didn’t, so I gave the concert wearing my aeroplane clothes, sharing the stage with the smartest DJ-ed German Quartet you can imagine!

After this, the group will visit Oregon’s largest city, Portland, to give two concerts for the Friends of Chamber Music series, the longest non-interrupted chamber music series in Oregon. They were engaged to perform for this prestigious series via a connection originally made at the annual Corbridge Chamber Music Festival, of which Rob and the Gould Piano Trio are artistic directors. The Friends of Chamber Music always invite artists to give two performances on consecutive nights in order to satisfy high demand, which gives the ensemble a great opportunity to present a broad range of music from their extensive repertoire. The programmes feature trios by Frühling, Dvořák, Haydn and Ravel, while the full quartet will play Huw Watkins’s ‘Four Fables’ in the first concert, and Messiaen’s ‘Quartet for the End of Time’ in the second.

For the latter part of their tour, Rob and the Goulds travel south into California, where they will give concerts in San Jose and Mill Valley, just north of San Francisco. The San Jose Chamber Music Society has recently relocated to the Concert Hall at San Jose State University, and this will be one of the first concerts at their new venue. The ensemble will perform works by Beethoven, Frühling and Dvořák, and there will be a pre-concert talk by musicologist Roger Emanuels. Their last concert will be for the Mill Valley Chamber Music Society, and takes place in Mount Tamalpais United Methodist Church, where they will give a final rendition of Huw Watkins’s ‘Four Fables’, alongside Frühling and Dvořák.
