Robert Plane and the Gould Piano Trio present two concerts as part of the Leeds International Concert Season series, “Russia in Revolution”.
For the first concert on 12 Dec 2017 at 7.30pm they are joined by the renowned Stravinsky and French music expert Peter Hill and will perform music by Stravinsky and Debussy:
Stravinsky Suite from The Soldier’s Tale
Debussy Sonata for Violin and Piano
Stravinsky 3 pieces for clarinet solo
Debussy Premiere Rhapsodie
Debussy Jeux, arranged for four hands by Debussy
Stravinsky The Rite of Spring, arranged for four hands by Stravinsky
Stravinsky’s Russian style is fully displayed in his own arrangement of The Rite of Spring for piano duet, but even by the time he composed his Soldier’s Tale in 1918 and the Three Pieces for Clarinet the following year, a more post-Russian Revolutionary cosmopolitan style is emerging, influenced by jazz idioms. Who better to clarify these new traits in all their diversity than clarinet virtuoso, Robert Plane.
The ballet Jeux was originally performed by the Ballets Russes in 1913, but was rather eclipsed by reaction to the first performance of the “scandalous” ballet, The Rite of Spring the same month! In another piano four-hand arrangement by its composer we can appreciate the finesse of Debussy’s score to the full. Debussy’s Jeux, and Stravinsky The Rite of Spring are performed by Benjamin Frith and Peter Hill.
On 23 Jan 2018 the Gould Piano Trio and Robert Plane perform:
Glinka Trio Pathétique
Arensky Piano Trio No 1 in D minor, Op 32
Rimsky-Korsakov Scheherazade op. 35, arr. Noack for Piano Trio and Clarinet
